McCabe Organic Whole Oat Groats, 2lbs

Regular price $19.99

The purest form of the oat, these whole groats are minimally processed to retain the bran, germ, and endosperm for a nutrient-dense, chewy texture. But ‘What is a “groat”?’ A groat is the whole oat kernel in its purest edible form. Only the tough, inedible outer hull is removed, while the bran, germ, and endosperm remain intact.

Why Choose This Product?

McCabe Organic Whole Oat Groats are the gold standard for those seeking the least processed version of the oat grain. Unlike rolled or instant oats, groats remain entirely intact, ensuring that all the natural fiber, protein, and heart-healthy Beta-Glucans are preserved. This makes them an exceptional choice for anyone prioritizing digestive health and sustained energy levels throughout the day.

When cooked, these groats offer a robust, nutty flavor and a distinct "pop" in texture that is far more satisfying than traditional porridge. They are incredibly versatile beyond breakfast; their structural integrity allows them to be used as a wholesome substitute for rice in savory pilafs, risottos, or as a dense base for Mediterranean-style grain salads.

Grown under strict organic protocols in Southern California, our groats are free from synthetic pesticides and GMOs. Because they are a whole grain, they have a lower glycemic index, helping to stabilize blood sugar. For the health-conscious cook, this 2lb bag provides a high-value, nutrient-packed staple that brings authentic, rustic quality to the modern kitchen.

Pure Whole Grain Integrity

Experience oats in their most natural and complete form. These whole groats retain 100% of the original grain; nothing removed except the inedible outer hull. This means you get maximum fiber, essential nutrients, and a naturally low glycemic index, helping you stay full and energized for longer. It’s clean, simple nutrition just as nature intended.

Versatile Culinary Base

From nourishing breakfast bowls to hearty dinner sides, these groats adapt effortlessly to your kitchen. Their rich, nutty flavor and pleasantly chewy texture make them a wholesome alternative to refined grains like white rice or pasta. Whether you prefer sweet or savory, they give your meals more depth, texture, and satisfaction.

Frequently Asked Questions

A groat is the whole oat kernel in its purest edible form. Only the tough, inedible outer hull is removed, while the bran, germ, and endosperm remain intact. This makes groats the least processed type of oats available. Because nothing valuable is stripped away, they retain their full nutritional profile; rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and natural oils; unlike rolled or instant oats which undergo additional processing.
Soaking is optional but highly beneficial. When you soak groats for 6–12 hours (or overnight), the outer bran layer softens, which helps them cook faster and more evenly. It can also improve digestibility and texture, giving you a softer, more pleasant bite. If you’re short on time, you can skip soaking, but expect a longer cooking time and a firmer texture.
Whole oat groats contain natural oils that can lose freshness if exposed to heat, light, or air for long periods. Store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place such as a pantry. For extended shelf life—especially in warmer climates—refrigeration after opening is strongly recommended. This helps maintain their flavor, nutritional quality, and prevents rancidity.
Yes, these groats can be ground into fresh oat flour at home. Using a high-speed blender or grain mill, you can process them into a fine or slightly coarse flour depending on your preference. Freshly ground oat flour works well in baking recipes like pancakes, muffins, and breads, offering a wholesome, slightly nutty flavor. It’s best to grind in small batches for maximum freshness.
Oats are naturally free from gluten. However, cross-contact can occur during farming, transportation, or processing if the same equipment is used for wheat or other gluten-containing grains. Because of this, these groats are not certified gluten-free. If you have celiac disease or severe gluten sensitivity, it’s important to choose oats that are specifically labeled and certified gluten-free.
For stovetop cooking, use 3 cups of water for every 1 cup of groats. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a gentle simmer and cook for 45–60 minutes. If you’ve pre-soaked the groats, the cooking time may reduce slightly. You’ll know they’re ready when the grains are tender but still pleasantly chewy. You can adjust water slightly depending on whether you prefer a firmer or softer texture.

A Different Oatmeal for Variety

Oat groats were recommended to me in lieu of regular oats for my gluten-free, sugar-free, dairy-free diet. It doesn't taste the same as regular oats or steel cut oats, but with a slow-cooker overnight recipe, after a few breakfasts, I found myself looking forward to it for a warm meal on a cold morning. Try it.

Quite tasty and satisfying

I have found these oats to be more satiating for my morning breakfast meal. I do prefer these groats after they have been soaked at least 10 hours, and then I stove-top cook them 50 minutes and let them sit for another 10 minutes. So it does take planning to cook.

Fresh and on time

This is the first time I tried groats - I had a recipe and couldn't find them in the supermarkets. Fresh and nutty and soft when cooked - excellent! Try these with lemon zest, juice and dried cherries!

Excellent quality - surpassing other brands

Best brand of organic oat groats, by far. Clean, fresh, hulled, and delicious. TIP: Stove-top cooking with frequent stirring takes 1 hour. Save time with this overnight method. In a 2.25 qt pot, bring 4 cups water to a boil, add 1/2 tsp salt (optional) and 1 cup oat groats, stir, turn off the heat, place the lid on the pot and leave overnight. In the morning, gently boil off the remaining water in the pot, stirring frequently, until most of the water has evaporated and the firmness of the groats is to your liking.

Great for a healthy breakfast, and no husks!

I purchased this product last year, then switched to a cheaper product, which I didn't like due to all the husks present. I've switched back to this brand, which was great, just more pricey.
